About
A Vision For Science Education for All
With the formation of Mobius Spokane in January 2005, a two-phase vision
for making science and technology accessible to every family in the Inland
Northwest – and beyond – was launched. Phase One was completed the same year
with the opening of Mobius Kids, an interactive children's museum located at River Park Square.
Phase Two is Mobius
Science Center,
a world-class science and technology institution. Set to break ground in 2011, Mobius Science
Center will be open to
the public in 2012.
A Collaborative Effort
Working with industry experts and entrepreneurs – along with Eastern Washington
University, Gonzaga
University, Washington State University,
and Whitworth University
– Mobius Science Center
will develop exhibits that are on the cutting edge of technology. The center
will also partner with regional schools and educational organizations to provide
supplemental science education both inside and outside the classroom.
Mobius Science Center Timeline
2005 Mobius
Spokane is formed by the merger of Inland Northwest Science and Technology Center
and the Children's Museum
of Spokane, its goal to
provide a continuum of hands-on, interactive, imaginative, and inspirational
learning programs to serve all age groups. Mobius Kids, an interactive
children's museum, opens in River
Park Square in downtown Spokane.
2006 "Bringing
Science and Technology Innovation Home," the Mobius Science Center Capital
Campaign charged with raising the $29.5 million to build the center, begins.
2007 The
capital campaign reaches $4 million, exceeding all expectations.
2008 Raising
money at an unprecedented rate, the capital campaign reaches $11 million, $3.4
million of which has come from the State of Washington. This is nearly half the amount
needed for groundbreaking, which is 80 percent ($23.6 million) of the total
budget, and is pledged by community leaders, local and regional businesses, and
foundations.
2009 MOBIUSLAB, a vehicle for shocasing the science cetner to investors, community leaders, students, and families, opens for a two-month engagement at NorthTown Mall.
2010
The design phase, both for
the structure itself and for the exhibits, begins.
